FAQ

Frequently asked about official vignette purchases

Quick answers on using the official links, timing activation, and proving payment.

What is a vignette vs a classic toll?
A vignette is a time-based road charge for defined roads over a set period; classic tolls are distance/gantry based. Vignettes usually cover motorways/expressways, sometimes wider national roads.
Which countries need car vignettes?
For cars <=3.5 t: Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland; Belarus uses an e-vignette on certain routes. Heavy-vehicle systems differ.
Do motorcycles need a vignette?
Yes: Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Switzerland. No: Bulgaria, Czechia, Moldova, Romania, Slovakia, Belarus.
Do trailers or caravans need their own vignette?
Most countries treat the car+trailer as one unless the combo exceeds 3.5 t. Switzerland is the big exception: car and trailer each need a vignette. Heavy combinations use truck systems.
What about vehicles over 3.5 t?
They normally use distance-based truck/bus systems (GO-Box in Austria, DarsGo in Slovenia, HU-GO in Hungary, Eurovignette, etc.), not the car vignette.
Can I avoid a vignette by using local roads?
Maybe. Austria/Czechia/Hungary/Slovakia/Slovenia/Switzerland toll mainly motorways; Bulgaria/Romania/Moldova charge most national roads, so skipping the vignette is rarely practical there.
Do I need the vignette before entering the motorway?
Yes. It must be valid before you join the charged network. Camera checks start within the first kilometres; don't rely on grace windows.
Where can I buy it?
Official online shop/portal (see links above), fuel stations and border points, plus official apps in some countries.
How long is it valid?
Common options: 1-day or 10-day, monthly/30-day/60-day, annual. Switzerland is fixed 1 Dec-31 Jan (14 months). Belarus has 15/30/annual.
Can I choose a future start date?
Yes in major systems. Austria's 2-month/annual online for consumers usually starts 18 days later by default; short vignettes can start immediately. Others let you pick a calendar start.
Does validity start at purchase time or midnight?
"Start today" is typically immediate; future dates start at 00:00 of that day. Switzerland's annual is fixed and not date-selectable.
Is digital proof enough?
The vignette is tied to your plate in the national database. Keep the email/PDF/SMS or a screenshot as proof during checks.
What if I mistype the licence plate?
The plate and country must be correct or it's treated as no vignette. Some operators allow minor corrections for a small fee; contact them quickly.
Is one vignette valid in several countries?
No. Every vignette is country-specific; there is no multi-country car vignette.
Do I need one for a short cross-border hop?
If that hop is on a tolled motorway/expressway, yes. Exit before the "vignette required" section to avoid needing one.
Do vignettes cover tunnels and special bridges?
Usually not. You need a valid vignette plus any separate toll for specific tunnels, passes, or bridges.
How are they enforced?
Automatic plate cameras and mobile patrols compare your plate to the vignette register in real time.
Is there a grace period?
No formal grace. Some countries let you pay a compensatory fee if caught, but the drive itself is still a violation.
How high are the fines?
Expect roughly three-figure penalties: Austria substitute toll then higher fine, Slovenia around EUR 300, Switzerland CHF 200 + vignette, Romania roughly 500-1000 RON, others similar ranges.
What about rental cars?
Ask the rental company if a vignette is included and check windshield/app proof. If missing, buy your own immediately; fines usually hit the driver or rental company then your card.
Are there discounts or exemptions?
Highly country-specific. Some exempt emergency/diplomatic vehicles or certain eco/disabled categories; many have no discount for private EVs. Check the official exemption pages.
Motorhomes over 3.5 t?
They normally must use the heavy-vehicle toll system, not a car vignette. Check your permitted total weight before buying.
How do I avoid toll/vignette roads in navigation apps?
Enable "avoid tolls" (and often "avoid motorways" in BG/RO/MD). Expect slower routes and occasional charged city bridges/tunnels even with that setting.
